Dear Grand Masters, Masters, Instructors, Coaches and Fellow Taekwondoists:

The OTA will be conducting a Referee Seminar on January 27 and 28, 2007, hosted by Kicks for Kids, 1160 Blair Rd, Burlington, Ontario. A map can be located on their website at www.kicksforkids.ca/school/contact.html.

Day 1 will run from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; and will be spent on the current WTF Competition Rules, viewing training DVD’s and World Championship videos, hand signals and most importantly, determining “what a point is” with real players. Day 2 will begin at 9:00 am with the written test, followed by practical situations with real competitors playing the game, use of ASL electronic scoring equipment, and finally a practical test, with target completion time being 3:00 pm.

The OTA referee seminar is very hands on and interactive for all participants. In fact, we strongly encourage players, coaches and instructors to attend; not so much to become a referee, if that is not their goal, but to properly learn the current competition rules, and equally as important, to learn about what the referee thinks during a match.

Firstly, if you will be in attendance, please send an email to me at knuckles@eagle.ca as soon as possible. I will then send a copy of the rules in PDF format to you, for your review prior to the seminar. Please bring your copy with you. We would actually like to spend as little time as possible on the rule manual. We will have to spend some time on the most important articles, and ensure that material is covered for the written test, which will be held on Sunday morning. This way, the participants will have Saturday evening to study. In addition, if you bring your own copy, this will ensure that I have sufficient supplies on hand for all participants, rather than risk not having enough.

Secondly, please download and print a copy of the application on the following link: www.taekwondo.on.ca/download/ota_referee_application_form.pdf. Please have it completed and appropriate funds available immediately upon your arrival to facilitate registration as quickly as possible. In addition, you must be a current OTA 2006/2007 member; if not, this registration form is on the link: www.taekwondo.on.ca/download/black_belt_membership_form.pdf and must be completed prior to participation at the seminar. This way, we will spend more time on the game, than on administration.

Thirdly, we will be utilizing the Kyorugi DVD produced in Korea outlining the permitted techniques and areas, as well as prohibited acts. We will also be showing tapes of the World Championships; and utilizing the actual ASL system, so participants will spar, and you actually feel what it is like to be both in the corner and in the centre of a real match.

Fourthly, please bring a copy of your Kukkiewon certificate; and if you are anticipating attending in order to upgrade Referee class levels, please bring a copy of your most current referee class certificate, if possible.

Finally, at the option of the participants, we would like you to bring your sparring gear. The reason is threefold. 1. In the past when we practice actual ring management with mock matches, we usually go home with some severe bruises. 2. It will make a practice match more realistic for the referee. 3. We can spend more time on “what is a point”, which is the actual reason for the game.

I look forward to hearing from the interested participants, and hope that I can provide a fun and enlightening seminar for all.

Yours truly,

Master Barbara Marian
International Referee
OTA Referee Committee
